Two members of the University of South Carolina Union’s Lady Bantams softball team were killed in a crash on Friday night. Two of their teammates were also injured.
USC Union’s marketing and development director Annie Smith said the campus and community were heartbroken following the news.
Rusty Clevenger, who is the Spartanburg County Coroner, said the deceased were 18-year-old Mia Stokes, a resident of Charlotte, and 20-year-old Grace Revels who was from Lancaster.
Troopers said the crash was reported around 10 p.m. on Woodley Road at SC-295. The road, also called Southport Road, is about two miles south of Spartanburg.
The girls were traveling in a 2012 Ford when a 2012 Toyota, heading in the other direction, crossed the center line and collided with the Ford.
Troopers said Stokes died at the crash scene while Revels passed away at Spartanburg Regional hospital.
The driver, Devyn Royce, and passenger Mallory Stokes also suffered injuries. Mallory, who is Mia’s twin, will need an operation on her arm. Royce was left with a sprained wrist, sprained knee, bruises, and several cuts. Both had to be extracted from the vehicle mechanically.
Troopers reported that all four individuals were wearing seat belts.
Counselors were available at the school on Monday to help students and staff impacted by the tragedy.
Meantime, the driver of the Toyota was identified as 23-year-old Yuriy Carpik of Spartanburg. He also suffered injuries and was transported to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
The SC Highway Patrol’s Multijurisdictional Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) continues to investigate the accident.
